Remaining calm in an emergency can be the difference between life and death. KHON2 News reporter Andrew Pereira, along with videographer Justin Kanno documented how the U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Base Hawaii train to get out of a sinking helicopter.

Feature News Report - Serious Series
"Surviving the Rip”
Andrew Pereira, Reporter
Justin Kanno, Photographer

Deceiving, powerful and deadly. Every year rip currents account for more than a hundred deaths in our country and thousands of ocean rescues. KHON2 News reporter Andrew Pereira and videographer Justin Kanno documented some of the state’s rip current hazard areas in this two-part news series.

“I'm very proud of Andrew, Justin and Kanoa as recipients of these three nominations from the Academy. These represent samples of the hard work and creativity of our reporters and photographers,” said Lori Silva, KHON2 news director.

The EMMY Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by NATAS. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 2010 calendar year.

KHON2 President and General Manager Joe McNamara said, “It’s great to see our news team recognized nationally for what our loyal Hawaii viewers already know us for, that is great storytelling every day.”

This year 703 entries were received in 59 categories. English and Spanish language entries were judged and scored separately. A minimum of five peer judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 on Content, Creativity and Execution. The total score is divided by the number of judges. The mean score is sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looks at blind scores (not knowing the category) and decides on the cut off number for nominations and recipients. The results are then tabulated.
